TOPIC: Shanghai-Hong Kong Stock Connect and Shenzhen-Hong Kong Stock Connect Update: A New Chapter in Connecting International and Chinese Investors

Following the successful launch of Shanghai-Hong Kong Stock Connect on November 17, 2014, an agreement was reached to establish Shenzhen-Hong Kong Stock Connect on Oct 11, 2016 with target launch by end of year.

Mr. Tae Yoo of the Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited will give an overview of the evolution of cross border integration and how Stock Connect operates, focusing on the differences between Shanghai-Hong Kong and Shenzhen-Hong Kong Stock Connect, the new opportunities and the advantages of Stock Connect over QFII/RQFII.

Ms. Julia Charlton will cover some of the specific legal issues, including beneficial ownership, how to assert rights over SSE securities, PRC foreign shareholding restrictions, short selling reporting requirements etc.

Julia Charlton has practised as a corporate finance lawyer in Hong Kong since 1987 and is experienced in the fields of securities law, capital markets, private equity, M&A, investment funds, restructuring and regulatory issues. Julia advises financial institutions and companies on listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and has vast experience of private equity in the PRC and investment funds. She is a member of the Listing Committee of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and of the SFC's Takeovers and Takeovers Appeal Panels. Her firm, Charltons, has received the “Boutique Law Firm of the Year” award from Asian Legal Business every year from 2006 to 2016.

Tae Seok Clement Yoo serves as Managing Director in Client and Marketing Services at HKEX. His department is responsible for Client Relationship Management, including key relationships between HKEX and their intermediaries, global buyside, and custodians and trusts bank.

Since joining HKEX in 2011, he was co-head of platform development & strategy and head of product & index development. Yoo has over 20 years of financial industry experience with 14 years at CME Group in business development, sales and risk management in Chicago and Asia. Prior to CME, he worked at Sumitomo Mitsui Bank (Sakura Dellsher, Inc.) and at Goldman Sachs & Co. in Chicago.
