TOPIC: Hong Kong Competition Law – What Can We Expect?
Competition law is fundamental to any successful economy and Hong Kong is no exception. The landmark Competition Ordinance (the “Ordinance”) was passed in June 2012 and, since May 2014, the newly-formed Competition Commission has been engaging in dialogue with Hong Kong businesses to prepare the community for the implementation of the Ordinance.
In this session, Slaughter and May and the Competition Commission will give a joint presentation to provide their different perspectives on what Hong Kong businesses can expect from the Ordinance, particularly in the early days of the regime. The topics they will cover include:
- Brief overview of the Ordinance
- The likely common pitfalls for businesses in Hong Kong
- Practical tips for a successful compliance audit for your company
- Enforcement of the Ordinance, including the Competition Commission’s objectives and general approach to remedies
- Challenges the Competition Commission expects to face in Hong Kong and how it will work with businesses to tackle difficult issues
- Roadmap to full implementation of the Ordinance
SPEAKERS:
Natalie Yeung, Partner, Slaughter and May
Natalie is an experienced competition lawyer who has been representing clients in relation to the new Hong Kong competition legislation since 2009. Her experience covers a range of sectoral regulation, anti-trust and merger control work. She has advised clients in a variety of sectors, including transport, financial services, retail and utilities. She has conducted competition compliance audits, advised on contractual arrangements and provided training to senior management and employees to ensure businesses are ready for the implementation of the Ordinance. In addition, Natalie has been responsible for coordinating the PRC and Asian merger notifications on a number of global transactions. Natalie is recognised as a leading lawyer in The International Who's Who of Competition Lawyers & Economists 2014 and she is also listed in Chambers Asia, 2014. She has a degree from Cambridge University and is admitted as a solicitor in England and Wales and Hong Kong. She speaks English and Cantonese.
Rose Webb, Senior Executive Director, Hong Kong Competition Commission
Rose Webb is the Senior Executive Director of the Hong Kong Competition Commission and has 25 years of government and regulatory experience. Prior to her appointment to HKCC in April 2014, Rose was the Executive General Manager of the Mergers and Adjudication Group at the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) and, prior to that, the General Manager of the Enforcement and Coordination Branch at the ACCC. She has degrees in Economics and Law from the Australian National University and a Masters of Law from Sydney University.
