TOPIC: The Trans-Pacific Partnership - developments and opportunities

The Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) creates a free trade area accounting for nearly 40 per cent of global GDP and a third of global trade.  The agreement was signed by Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, the United States and Vietnam on 5 October 2015.  Once it enters into force, the TPPA has the potential to transform trade and investment flows in the Asia-Pacific region.

Nearly 12 months on, what are the key developments and opportunities for businesses in the TPP region?  What are the opportunities for businesses outside the TPP region, including China and Hong Kong?  A Freshfields panel of experts will discuss some of the key developments in the TPPA and its potential impact on trade and investment in the Asia-Pacific region, including the protection of IP rights; investment protection and investor-State dispute settlement; the impact of the TPPA on China and Hong Kong; proposed changes to government procurement; and the treatment of state-owned enterprises.

SPEAKERS

	Robert Ashworth is the firm’s Asia managing partner and a member of the corporate practice. He specialises in M&A, private equity and corporate finance work. For more than 20 years, he has been recognised as a leading individual by legal directories (including Chambers Asia, Asia Pacific Legal 500 and IFLR Asia) for his ground-breaking work in corporate M&A (private and public) and private equity.
	Richard Bird is a partner and head of our Intellectual Property and Commercial practice group in Asia. He advises clients on intellectual property, TMT regulatory and data privacy and related matters in connection with commercial and transactional projects across the region and on contentious intellectual property matters in Hong Kong and China.
	John Choong is a partner in our Hong Kong office, specializing in international arbitration and cross-border disputes throughout Asia. Over the course of 15 years, John has represented clients in a wide range of international commercial and investment arbitrations. John is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute and Hong Kong and Singapore Institute of Arbitrators, serves on the SIAC Users Council National Committee (Hong Kong) and is a Singapore country rapporteur for the ICC Task Force on the New York Convention.
	Robert Kirkness is a member of our international arbitration group in Singapore and specialises in investment treaty arbitration, public international law and international commercial arbitration.  Robert has represented foreign investors and States in some of the largest and most complex investment treaty disputes globally, and frequently advises foreign investors on how to structure their investments to obtained the benefits of investment treaty protection.  Robert currently represents clients in a number of investment disputes in the Asia-Pacific region.
