Breakfast Presentation

The HKCCA’s Executive Committee invites you to the following presentation, hosted by Berwin Leighton Paisner.

Coffee and light breakfast will be provided. 1 Law Society of Hong Kong CPD point has been accredited.  New York and California Approved Jurisdiction policy may apply.

TOPIC:  Belt and Road: Russia & Central Asia – opportunities and threats on the modern Silk Road

Ian Ivory, BLP's Head of Corporate for Asia, and Gulnur Nurkeyeva, Head of the China desk for GRATA Law Firm, will examine the legal frameworks, highlight the differences from what people might expect in HK (or even China) when doing business in Russia & Central Asia and flag the key legal and commercial risks that tend to come up on every deal in these jurisdictions.

Ian is certainly well qualified to talk about this fascinating part of the Silk Road, having spent 7 years as the Head of English Law in the Goltsblat BLP office in Moscow. Gulnur is based in Beijing and has over 16 years of experience in the Kazakhstani legal market and presently advises major Chinese companies such as China Railway Construction, China National Technical Import & Export Corporation & China National Chemical Engineering.

SPEAKERS:

Ian Ivory, Head of Corporate, Asia, BLP.
Ian has over 20 years’ experience working across Asia, Europe, US, CIS and Russia.  He specializes in emerging & high growth markets, focussing on cross border M&A, private equity & venture capital, joint ventures, corporate finance and shareholder disputes.  A fluent Russian speaker, Ian has also co-authored the books “Use of English law in Russian transactions - a comparative review” (Alpina Publishers 2011) and “A Case Study Guide to M&A Transactions in Russia (2013)”.

Gulnur Nurkeyeva, Head of GRATA Law Firm's China desk.
Gulnur has extensive experience advising Chinese companies in matters of Kazakh corporate law, construction activities and M&A transactions. Previously Gulnur has acted as Head of Legal in-house for the Samryuk-Kaznya Group, which manages the shares of Kazakh SOEs across a wide range of sectors such as oil & gas, telecoms, transport, nuclear & metals, as well as  for the Kazakh Ministry of Taxes where she participated in drafting Kazakhstan’s first tax code.”
