TOPIC:  Pro Bono Legal Opportunities: Expand your horizons by taking up new professional challenges and helping others to access justice

It is common knowledge that many in-house lawyers wish to provide pro bono legal assistance and at the same time, many NGOs and charities are crying out for pro bono legal assistance.  Why, then, are in-house lawyers refraining from providing their assistance when there’s a clear demand?

This session will provide useful tips on the following areas:

1. Regulatory and insurance issues;

2. Current options and implementing in-house programs; and

3. Further developments: living the dream.

Panelists:

Davyd Wong, Director, Legal Counsel of KPMG

Davyd wants to live in a community that is more fair, just and equal. As the founder of the Public Interest Law Society of Hong Kong, a local non-profit organisation for lawyers passionate about improving access to justice, he knows he is not alone. Having more than 10 years’ legal experience as a lawyer, in Australia and Hong Kong, pro bono and public interest matters have been a consistent feature in his private practice career. But once he became an in-house counsel, Davyd found that the opportunities to engage in pro bono work were significantly more limited. Ever the optimist however, he believes that times are changing…

Evelyn Yan, Director of Claims, Aon Risk Solutions | Specialty Broking, Asia

Evelyn advises clients in the handling of professional liability & special risk exposures mainly relating to professional indemnity, D&O, fidelity, crime, cyber and transactional insurance matters. Before this, Evelyn headed up Aon Hong Kong's insurance claims department, which provides a full range of claims services to corporate and professional clients. Prior to this, she was Legal Officer with Essar Insurance Services Limited managing claims against Solicitors, and also had a corporate counsel role with Aon.  Evelyn joined Essar/Aon in 2008 from Barlow Lyde & Gilbert where she was Senior Associate with 9 solid years in professional indemnity and financial lines dispute resolution.

Sarah Oliver, Legal Counsel, BNP Paribas

Sarah advises business lines and senior management on regulatory issues affecting the bank’s operations in Asia-Pacific and provides coverage to a variety of fixed income business lines. Sarah has also set up the legal team’s pro bono programme and is on the bank’s CSR committee. Before relocating to Hong Kong, Sarah worked at Hogan Lovells in Paris. She is admitted as a solicitor in England & Wales and as a French avocat. Sarah speaks English, French and Spanish.

Moderator

Annie Tang, Managing Director of Star Anise Legal

Annie is keen to help raise awareness of pro bono legal assistance opportunities amongst the in-house community. She initiated the first Panel discussion on the subject in Hong Kong to an audience of in-house lawyers (in 2016).  She is admitted as a solicitor in Hong Kong and England and Wales (non-practising). Annie was previously in private practice before changing careers. She is the co-founder and co-managing director of Star Anise Legal, a specialist legal recruitment company which has provided pro bono recruitment assistance to an NGO. She is also implementing the company’s CSR initiatives.
