TOPIC: Where were the lawyers?
Fair or unfair, this now seems to be the question on every journalist’s lips whenever a corporate scandal breaks. And in-house lawyers are not immune. In this interactive session, Sarah de Gay (General Counsel) and Peter Brien (Corporate Partner) of Slaughter and May will look at some of the recent headlines, examining stories such as the Panama Papers, the Paradise Papers, the sale and subsequent collapse of British Home Stores, the Hollywood sexual misconduct allegations and General Motors’ faulty ignitions, encouraging you to explore what these stories tell us about the working life of the modern lawyer.
Ultimately, the speakers will question whether there has been an inside counsel revolution and what role in-house lawyers now can and should play, as guardians of their corporations.

Sarah de Gay, General Counsel, Slaughter and May, London
After practising as a Corporate/M&A lawyer, Sarah established the Compliance department at Slaughter and May in 2008 and was appointed as the firm’s first General Counsel in 2015. She is also the firm’s COLP (Compliance Officer for Legal Practice) and a member of its Risk Committee. As such, she has particular responsibility for the full breadth of regulatory issues which affect the firm and plays a key role in risk management more generally.
Sarah has had a significant influence on the modernisation of the regulation of the solicitors’ profession. She was a founder member of the City of London Law Society’s Professional Rules and Regulation Committee (which she chaired until 2016). She was also a member of the Standards Committee of the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) from its formation until 2012, during which time the SRA wrote its first Handbook and introduced outcomes-focussed regulation. She is on the Editorial Committee of Cordery on Legal Services, the leading authority on the professional conduct, obligations and liability of solicitors.
Sarah was given the Chief Compliance Officer of the Year award at the Women in Compliance Awards in 2015.

Peter Brien, Senior Partner, Slaughter and May, Hong Kong
Peter is the senior partner in Slaughter and May’s Hong Kong office. Peter acts for corporate clients, private equity houses and investment banks in relation to mergers and acquisitions (both public and private), equity and debt capital markets and structured finance as well as advising a range of clients on general corporate matters including joint ventures and mergers and acquisitions.
Peter is the Deputy Chairman of the Listing Committee of the Main Board and Growth Enterprise Market of The Stock Exchange of Hong Kong Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited. He is also a member of the Sponsor Due Diligence Standards Initiative Group of Law Firms drafting the guidelines for the industry on the Regulatory Regime for Sponsors.
Peter is listed in the Elite Leading Lawyers section of the Legal 500 Asia Pacific 2018's Guide to Outstanding Lawyers in the Asia Pacific for Corporate (including M&A) in Hong Kong and is listed as an expert in the 2018 edition of International Who's Who Legal 2018: Mergers and Acquisitions, Hong Kong and the 2017 edition of Who’s Who Legal Capital Markets: Structured Finance in Hong Kong. He is admitted as a solicitor in England and Wales and Hong Kong.
