TOPIC:  Developments in the media, advertising and digital sphere – a regional update

The path to consumers in the emerging and emerged markets of Asia today is an increasingly digitised and unfamiliar terrain.  The legal framework around brand activity in the areas of media, advertising and digital is developing at speed as legislators and regulators attempt to keep or out pace with the change.  This brings with it a shifting risk profile, but also unprecedented opportunity for brands.  Whatever you think about these areas, whichever strategies you adopt and how you go about them, one thing is certain: these are business-critical topics that will dictate the success, if not survival, of your ventures in region.  As technology marches inexorably on, new opportunities are constantly arising.  So, unfortunately, are pitfalls!

In this session, we will aim to look at some of the recent developments in regulation in the advertising and digital sphere across greater China and south east Asia, along with a preview of what is coming in the near future.  This session will aim to give in-house counsel, not only a good overview of changes to the framework, but also some practical tips in turning these risks into opportunities.

Chad Dowle

Group Head of Media, Advertising & Digital Practice

Chad is a specialist in media and digital law with expertise in supporting clients to achieve their communication aims in emerging markets. He heads Rouse's global Media, Advertising and Digital practice from Hong Kong and Dubai.  Chad has practiced in the marketing law arena both in house and as a trusted external counsel. Chad regularly advises clients on strict legal issues, including regulatory compliance, promotion registration, and terms and conditions.  He also advises on more practical issues, including contest mechanic development, brand awareness on social media, and cultural sensitivity in advertising. When contributing to advertisement development, Chad is strongly-attuned to spotting easily overlooked issues in the details, which could otherwise have significant consequences.  For social media, Chad understands the power and reach digital platforms have to connect consumers directly with brand-owners. He takes these important nuances into account when counselling online behaviour, all while placing great value on quick turn-around time when advising on fast-paced social marketing campaigns.
